The Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology

Scope

The Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, publishes original research papers, Short notes and Review articles in English in the interdisciplinary areas of biological sciences and engineering/technology. Preparation of manuscripts

Submission of paper implies that it has not been published or being considered for publication elsewhere. Care should be taken to prepare a compact manuscript with precision in presentation, which will help authors in its acceptance. All the papers are subjected to review by referees.

Manuscript

Three copies of the single-spaced typed manuscript (maximum 12 pages) on a high grade A-4 size paper (210x297 mm), with margins (left 25, right 20, superior and inferior 30 mm) should be prepared. This should be divided under the following headings: ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, RESUMO, REFERENCES. These headings should be typed in bold upper case (12 font).

Title

The title (18 font, bold) of the paper should clearly reflect its contents. It should be followed by the name(s) of author(s) with expanded initials (12 font, bold) and the address(s) (italic, 10 font) of the institution(s) where the work has been carried out.

ABSTRACT
Each paper should be provided with an abstract (italic) of 100-150 words, describing briefly on the purpose and results of the study. It should be prepared as concisely as possible.

Key words
Authors should provide three to six key words that will be used in indexing their paper.

INTRODUCTION
This should describe the background and relevant information about the work. It should also state the objective of the work.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
Authors must take care in providing sufficient details so that others can repeat the work. Standard procedures need not be described in detail.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Results and Discussion may be presented separately or in combined form (authors may decide easier way for them). Preliminary work or less relevant results are not to be described. The reproducibility of the results, including the number of times the experiment was conducted and the number of replicate samples should be stated clearly.

RESUMO
An abstract of the paper should also be prepared in Portuguese and placed before the list of References. Authors from other than Latin American countries can seek the help of Editor's office to prepare Portuguese resumo of their papers.

REFERENCES
References in the text should be cited at the appropriate point by the name(s) of the author(s) and year (e.g. Raimbault & Roussos, 1996; Raimbault et al., 1997). A list of references, in the alphabetic order (10 font), should appear at the end of the manuscript. All references in the list should be indicated at some point in the text and vice versa. Unpublished results should not be included in the list. Examples of references are given below.

Tables and Figures
Tables and figures, numbered consecutively with arabic numerals must be inserted at appropriate place in the text. These should be used to present only those data, which can not be described in the text.

Units and Abbreviations
The SI system should be used for all experimental data. In case other units are used, these should be added in parentheses. Only standard abbreviations for the units should be used. Full stop should not be included in the abbreviation (e.g. m, not m. or rpm, not r.p.m.). Authors should use '%' and '/' in place of 'per cent' and 'per'.

Manuscript lay-out
It is suggested that authors consult a recent issue of the journal for the style and layout. Except the title, abstract and key words, entire text should be placed in two columns on each page. Footnotes, except on first page indicating the corresponding author (8 font) should not be included. The entire manuscript should be prepared in Times New Roman, 11 font (except reference list, which should be in 10 font).
